The lovely, historic town of Witham has something for everyone, from parks and nature reserves to community events, shops and restaurants. There are also a number of historic sites and places of interest, including Cressing Temple Barns, which is counted as one of the most popular things to do in Witham.

As you explore, the town’s past can be seen in its architecture, and you will notice a mix of new and old properties, some dating back to Tudor times. Be sure to also visit the war memorial on The Avenue. This lovely little park is well kept and a fitting tribute to those lost in the world wars.

Cressing Temple Barns

Witham Rd, Cressing, Braintree, CM77 8PD

This nationally important site is Grade I listed and home to some of the country’s oldest timber barns and rare surviving Templar buildings. Admission is free (unless attending an event) and there are displays, several gardens, tea rooms, and picnics are welcome.

Dorothy L Sayers Statue

Newland Street, Witham

Visit the statue of this famous local writer (and her cat) situated outside her house and the library.

Support your local team: Witham Town non-league football club.

You are spoilt for choice when it comes to golf:

Witham Library

Inside a striking building in the middle of town, don’t overlook the library as one of the top Witham attractions. Welcoming and packed with resources, this community hub has a lot to offer, including bookable spaces and weekly groups.

Witham Town Hall Information Centre

61 Newland Street, Witham CM8 2FE

The public-facing part of the Town Hall is an inviting space with helpful staff. Pop in for expert local advice, pamphlets, tickets to local shows, and a range of local gifts.

Annual events

There are a superb range of annual events in Witham, bringing together the community and visitors from near and far. Here is just a sample:

  • Medieval Fayre - St Nicolas' Church is host to this annual fayre with morris dancers, archery, stalls and treats.
  • Otto’s Pumpkin Patch – autumnal fun for the whole family – go and pick your own pumpkin.
  • Town Carol Service – Christmas is magical here with some lovely, festive things to do in Witham. If you enjoy a Christmas carol, the town carol service is part of the Christmas lights switch-on event, and St Nicholas Church has an incredible Carols by Candlelight service you must not miss.
  • Witham Street Entertainment Festival – formerly called the ‘puppet festival’, this hugely popular, free annual event in the centre of town puts on a range of spectacular shows in several venues. Put the third Saturday in September in your calendar now!
  • Witham Open Gardens – every year, green-fingered residents open their gardens to the public for charity, and we get the opportunity to indulge our curiosity to see what lies behind the garden walls. There are some stunning gardens to discover here!
