The best places to live in Chelmsford

If you’re considering a move to Chelmsford but don’t know the area, starting your property hunt can be daunting. Fortunately, there is something for everyone in this highly desirable part of Essex, whether you like a village community or city-centre vibes. Allow us to introduce you to some of the best places to live in Chelmsford.

Is Chelmsford a nice place to live?

Chelmsford is a wonderful place to live for many reasons. The bustling city itself offers shops, restaurants and events while the numerous surrounding villages and countryside provide a quieter pace of life. London is a quick and easy commute via 30-minute direct train, making daily trips for work extremely manageable. For families, there are great schools for all ages up to and including university and plenty to entertain children.

The best places to live in Chelmsford

If you’re new to the area, it can be tricky to pin down the best places to live. Everyone has their opinion, but we’ve put together a list of our favourite parts of Chelmsford and why.

New London Road

The New London Road is an extremely sought-after part of Chelmsford due to its traditional charm and central location (walking distance to shops, pubs and the train station). There is a mix of housing for every house-hunter, including lots of character-filled Victorian properties and we think this area definitely deserves a spot on our list of the best places to live in Chelmsford!

Great Baddow and Springfield

These two areas are in the suburbs of Chelmsford and considered some of the nicest places to live. Particularly popular with families, the village-like communities, quiet environment and green spaces are complemented by good local amenities and schools. All this and Chelmsford centre is just a stone’s throw away.

Chelmer Village

Chelmer Village is a popular residential suburb with modern homes. The village green and play area provides a delightful focal point, with the village hall, surgery, pharmacy, supermarket and other useful amenities nearby. This is another top choice for families due to its schools and community-feel and we particularly like that the River Chelmer flows southeast: ideal for riverside walks.

The Avenues in Broomfield

Broomfield is a quiet village to the north of Chelmsford with desirable residential neighbourhoods. You’ll find a mix of older homes and newer developments to choose from once again within easy reach of Chelmsford’s main amenities.

Sandon

This village southeast of Chelmsford centre offers a rural lifestyle with the benefit of quick and easy access to Chelmsford itself. Locals love the close by Danbury Park with its lakes, ancient woodland and lovely walks. Again, this suburb offers great schools, and a lovely community feel while surrounded by delightful countryside.

Green Close

Green Close in Chelmsford is a desirable location for property buyers, offering a combination of spacious homes, excellent schools, low crime rates, and convenient access to city amenities. Offering predominantly detached homes, this area is well served by reputable schools and close distance from Chelmsford city centre. The area is well-connected via the A12 and offers rail services to London Liverpool Street in 35 minutes, making it ideal for commuters.

Mounthill Avenue

Offering mostly detached houses with generous plots, Mounthill Avenue is a highly desirable location for property buyers. Located approximately 0.9 miles from Chelmsford Railway Station, providing regular services to London Liverpool Street and other destinations.

If you are looking for a blend of affluence, safety and convenience, then look no further.

Central Chelmsford

Last but by no means least, one of the best places to live in Chelmsford is right at its centre! If you’re looking for the bustle of city life or very easy access to the train station for commuting, this is the place for you. Take your pick of restaurants, shops and other amenities, with the rural suburbs and countryside within easy reach when you want to slow the pace.
