Close up of handle on blue door - Dedham - Beresfords Estate agents - Essex

Buying your own piece of history Paul Beresford reports

The architecture of homes has evolved throughout the centuries, and for anyone starting a property search with an open mind, the choice is endless.

Some buyers will only consider an older period home with a wealth of original features. One of the charms of Essex is that there are many such properties, a number of which are listed or have been sympathetically restored by their owners.

Many homes built in the 17th century were used to indicate the owner’s wealth with their charming appearances and grand features, such as this beautiful seven bedroom detached house in Kelvedon Hatch, and these remain sought-after today. Hanging Hill Lane was first built in the 16th century and has been updated over the centuries to include numerous popular features, including sash windows, exposed beams and studwork.

Georgian architecture is recognised for its simplicity and symmetry and Hutton Hall which was built in 1720 and is Grade II listed is a fine example of this.

The beauty of Victorian homes is that they come in all sizes and prices ranges, from bijou cottages to substantial family homes.

During the 20s and 30s, a number of suburban homes were built throughout Essex and appealed to commuters then as they do today. Homes from these periods that retain original features are rare so we are delighted to be selling this three bedroom home in Gidea Park whose owners have recreated the ambience of yesteryear with the deco and furnishings.

Many buyers prefer a contemporary or brand new home with the advantages of easy maintenance and the chance to start from scratch with a blank canvas. Clarion Gate in Chelmsford and Cherry Tree Park in Billericay are examples of two fine developments by leading national developers. Developers are keen to keep established trees and landscapes to provide the perfect backdrop to a new home.

Homes aren’t only about the history they come with, but also about the history you make when you move in. We are always delighted to help you with the first chapter.
