Things to do and see in Maldon

Maldon is a quiet town in Essex but that doesn’t mean there’s a lack of things to do here. Whether you’re a foodie, love history or need activities to entertain the kids, there are plenty of things to do in Maldon for everyone.

We’ve put together a list of our top things to do and see in Maldon to get you started.

Hythe Quay

Pay a visit to The Hythe: an iconic local area. There’s a fascinating collection of barges and other watercraft to look at, with the opportunity for day trips, too.

Northey Island

National Trust-run Northey Island is a haven of wildlife in the Blackwater Estuary. Access is via a tidal causeway which adds to the adventure (but it’s important to check tide times).

Osea Island

This private Island, also in the Blackwater Estuary and accessed via tidal causeway, is the location of choice for team building days, retreats, other events and getaways.

Promenade Park – boating lake, splash park, play area

Promenade Park on the waterfront in East Maldon is the perfect place for families. There’s a popular play area, splash park, sports facilities and even a boating lake and small zoo. Blackwater Leisure Centre is also found here with a fun swimming pool, gym and more.

Restaurants

For a small town, there are a surprising number of fantastic, independent places to eat. Here are a few of our favourites:

1. Le Bouchon

For special occasions and fine dining, Le Bouchon Brasserie and Hotel is the perfect choice.

2. Luigi’s

A hidden gem: Luigi’s serves authentic and delicious Italian dishes throughout the day.

3. The Queen’s Head

Make the most of the riverside setting and pop in to the Queen's Head for great pub food with lovely views on the quay.

4. Sark

On the High Street, Sark is a convenient go-to for delicious Mediterranean food.

5. Salt

Next door to Sark, this pizzeria/Italian restaurant is another great place to eat with family and friends.

6. Waterside cafes and pubs

Choose from a selection of cafes and pubs on the lock, Heybridge Basin.

Maldon Salt

Maldon is known for its hand-harvested, high-quality salt, which has been a signature product of the area for almost a thousand years. One of the top things to do in Maldon must surely be to visit the local salt store and see what all the fuss is about.

Walks and wildlife

If you’re struggling for ideas of what to do in Maldon, simply step out your front door. With such a unique setting, you simply must explore the lovely local walks. Stroll along the river Chelmer; explore Hoe Mill Lock; and head upstream to Beeleigh Weir. The river and estuary are a SSSI and offer excellent wildlife watching opportunities.

Wine

You might be surprised to learn that there have been vineyards in the Maldon area for hundreds of years and there are several that welcome visitors to this day. Join a tour or tasting to discover a new favourite.

Woodup Saltwater Swimming Pool in Tollesbury

Something a little unusual: Woodup Swimming Pool in nearby Tollesbury is filled with seawater (changed on spring tides) and free to the public. Why not take a picnic or make use of one of the BBQs and turn your visit into a daytrip?

Living in Maldon

While Maldon is quiet (and many people choose to settle here for that reason) there is plenty to see and do. Whether you decide to spend a leisurely afternoon on a waterside bench with a book, sample one of the popular restaurants or take the kids to Promenade Park to burn off some energy, you’ll find plenty of ways to occupy your free time, and we hope our list has given you a few new ideas.

If you’re still making a list of things to do in Maldon, our area guide has even more ideas and helps paint a picture of what life in Maldon could look like should you move here. If researching turns to house hunting, be sure to check out the current houses for sale and those for rent and learn about the best areas to live in Maldon.
