Making a splash for Leukaemia Charity Beresfords gear up for the Essex Dragon Boat Race World Cup 2014

On Sunday, July 6th, the banks of the river Chelmer, near The Meadows Shopping Centre, will be covered with fans lining up to watch 32 teams compete in the Essex Dragon Boat Race World Cup and cheer on team Beresfords!

The event is raising money for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, which is helping to beat blood cancer. With every Dragon Boat entered donating £400 and then the individual teams raising additional sponsorship, we are hoping to raise a lot of money for this life-saving charity.

Inspired by the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil, each team, comprising 10 rowers and a drummer, will adopt a competing country and will be encouraged to adopt their nation's dress. Team Beresfords will represent Italy, so watch this space their Italian inspired costumes! There will be a prize for the best-dressed winner, which is expected to generate some fierce competition among participants.

Dragon Boat racing is an ancient Chinese tradition and one of the fastest growing and most exciting water sports in the UK.  This competition requires each team to complete three races with the fastest six going through to the semi-finals and the Grand Final.

The event is designed to cater for all of the family, with entertainment and activities ranging from face painting and balloon art, to live music, food and drink stalls and fun fair games.
