Essexs passion for architecture

In Essex, many formidable architects have left their mark on homes across the county and we’ve gathered a couple of impressive examples currently available for you to buy.

George Sherrin, better known for designing the London Oratory and several iconic tube stations in West London, worked extensively in Essex. This seven bedroom Edwardian home in the heart of Hutton Mount is a prime example of his work. Built in 1896, the home boasts Edwardian features, a spacious open plan kitchen and family rooms, two reception rooms and a study. This substantial family home is on the market chain free. Scottish architect Frank Baggallay certainly left his architectural legacy in the county with Principal House, situated in the delightful village of North Stifford. The five bed house, built in 1901, was the Headmaster’s house and part of the Stepney Cottage Homes. Baggallay studied at University College London, King's College London, the Architectural Association and the Royal Academy Schools before working independently in London in 1880.

The current owner has brought the interior up to the 21st Century creating a striking Clive Christian kitchen with skylights, chandeliers and a beautiful garden conservatory. Each room in the house has been lavishly decorated and boasts high ceilings and large windows, allowing an abundance of natural light.

A basement has also been created by the current owners, which is the dream adult playground with a party room complete with bar area, disco with mood lighting and a cinema screen. To find out more about Principal House, contact our Upminster branch
