What’s On - Issue 119

By Shannon Lynch - 24 October 2016

Find events in Essex for the whole family to enjoy.  Here are our highlights of things to do in the area over the next couple of weeks.

Events 25th October – 8th November

  • Halloween Sleepover at Layer Marney Tower, Colchester, 25th & 26th October

Not since Tudor times have people slept the night in the Long Gallery at Layer Marney Tower.  But now they are offering you the opportunity to do so.  Once the stables for Lord Marney’s horses with those looking after them bedding down on the floor above, it’s now transformed for 21st century use, with oak sprung floor and Tudor panelling. As you drop off to sleep will you hear the stamping of the horses’ hooves, the rustle of straw, or a distant neigh? Was that just the wind in the roof, or was it the creaking of a knight’s armour???

  • Chilling Tales of Chelmsford at Chelmsford High Street, 27th & 28th October

This walking tour of the City describes the more unpleasant side of its history, featuring murders, ghosts, hangings, witchcraft and much more. An evening event not for the faint hearted! So what happened in Chelmsford to the wealthy landowner on his way to London? How did a protestant preacher end up facing a traitor’s death? If you would like to know more about the dark side of the history of Chelmsford and find the answers to these questions, then join them on this walk.

A word of warning though if you do not like stories of hangings, murders and of course ghosts then this walk is not for you!
