One-of-a-kind property for sale –Spitfire not included!

08 October 2014

It is not every day you see a plane parked up in your garden, but then this is not the home of just any family it’s home to the world’s only female Spitfire pilot, Carolyn Grace, and the property is on the market for the first time in twenty-four years.

This property  is a traditional country residence, with five large bedrooms and four reception rooms. But you wouldn’t necessarily expect to stumble upon a fully functioning World War Two Spitfire in the nine-acre plot!

Carolyn Grace moved to the house in the late summer of 1990 to raise her two children after she was widowed and she brought her late husband’s beloved Spitfire aircraft along with her!

The Spitfire was built in 1944 and served valiantly over the beaches of Normandy on D-day where it was the first plane to shoot down an enemy aircraft. There were thousands of Spitfires made during the Second World War, yet only a handful survive to the present day.

Set in Colne Valley, in the rural heart of Essex, the property is undoubtedly removed from the hustle and bustle of town life. The Grace family have loved the peace and quiet that country life in their home has afforded them.

The property also has bags of character and while it is unlisted, it is thought to date back to the sixteenth century and is registered in the Domesday Book. As a result, you can find a plethora of period features scattered throughout the house, including three Inglenook fireplaces and original beams and brickwork. There is also a fully detached one bedroom cottage which benefits from its own permitted development rights and could be extended subject to planning.  On the market through our Country Homes team for £1,350,000 it can be viewed by calling us on  01245 807265.
