Once again, it’s time for us to focus on our top Village in Essex and this month is all about Witham and its surrounding areas.
Witham is much in-demand thanks to its mainline railway station, beautiful nearby villages, especially Wickham Bishops, Terling, Kelvedon and Feering, and its wonderful community spirit.
Positioned just off the A12, with Colchester less than 15 miles away in one direction and the M25 approximately 25 miles away in the other, the town is perfect for the commuter. If you prefer to make your journeys via train, then there is a regular direct service into London Liverpool Street which takes a little under 50 minutes.
For those looking to escape the City smoke and enjoy a leisurely retreat then there is something to suit all tastes. A popular option is Benton Hall Golf Club and Leisure Spa situated on the outskirts of town. If you prefer something more central then the newly opened Witham Leisure Centre could prove ideal.
A spot of retail therapy is often popular and the High Street and surrounding precincts feature leading brands such as Boots, Superdrug and Tesco’s. Interspersed amongst the ‘big boys’ are independent butchers, fishmongers and greengrocers. A notable local name is Byford which offers trinkets and unusual gifts and investment pieces.
To help you take a break from all that shopping why not head to one of the town’s many eateries and bars. If you enjoy a good old fashioned Sunday roast then Crofters Wine Bar and Dining Rooms will be for you. For Italian enthusiasts there is the well regarded restaurant chain Prezzo’s and if tapas tantalises your taste buds, head to the town’s very own Spanish restaurant. The very popular Chinese restaurant Lian’s should also be on your list to sample.
There are a number of good schools in the area catering for all ages including secondary schools Maltings Academy and Rickstones Academy and primary schools Chipping Hill PS, Templars Infants and Elm Hall.

On Sunday 10th June 2018, beautiful gardens will be open in the superb village of Wickham Bishops. There will be a BBQ, ice cream, lunches, most gardens within walking distance all for you to enjoy a fun family day out.
