If you're a music fan that isn't going to V Festival, there is a whole weekend's worth of musical entertainment lined up for you in Chelmsford... and most of it's free!

Shakey's Sessions, Asylum, Chelmsford, Friday, August 15 

Stalwart Chelmsford promoter Shakey brings four diverse acts to the recently re-opened Viaduct Road venue. The Starlings, Feb 21s, Vixation and Roisin O'Hagan will be providing the live music. Doors from 8pm, entry £3

Loose Joints, Pepper Collins, Bassment, Chelmsford, Friday, August 15

Get the party started at one of Chelmsford's most stylish and popular venues with live rock, blues and funk from Loose Joints and Pepper Collins followed by the usual mix of indie and alt anthems from resident DJs into the early hours. Doors from 8pm, entry £3 before 10pm, £5 after

Fundraising all-dayer, Asylum, Chelmsford, Saturday, August 16

An afternoon and evening of eclectic live music to raise funds to keep this excellent, family-run venue open. First up is Aaliyah Wood at 1.30pm with acts playing all the way through to Failing To Fly who finish the night with their set at 10.20pm. Free entry but donations welcome to keep the venue going.

The <<dig>> Over: Volume One, Med Fusion, Springfield Road, Chelmsford, Sunday, August 17, from noon 

A free daytime party combining Mediterranean food, cocktails and top DJs Danny Bounce, Matt Love and Blokey playing soul, funk, jazz, hip hop, house and whatever else fits the vibe. It'll be a must for vinyl fans with Intense Records' Record and other sellers bringing Store Day collectibles and more for you to purchase. From noon-6pm, free entry

Mercury Rising UK, Kaine, Inexitus, Golden Fleece, Duke Street, Sunday, August 17

Round off the weekend with the metal night at the Fleece, one of Chelmsford's busiest, liveliest pubs. Ozzy and Motley Crüe influenced four-piece Mercury Rising UK, British metal revival act Kaine and Southend metalcore/thrash band Inexitus will be bringing the noise. From 7.30pm, free entry
