First-time buyers now make up the majority of home purchases bought with a mortgage in the UK, figures show.

According to a report from Halifax, first-time owners accounted for more than half of all sales with a mortgage in 2018.

A significant number of these sales will have been assisted by the Government backed Help To Buy scheme that allows purchasers to secure a mortgage with as little as 5% deposit for new build properties priced lower than £600,000. In addition, the recent stamp duty exemption for properties priced lower than £300,000 made getting on the housing ladder even more accessible for young buyers.

In the current market, developers are eager to access chain free purchasers and will often throw in further incentives such as carpeting, part furnishing and legal fee contributions to secure a first-time buyer.
