Cracking Christmas Cottages – Paul Beresford reports

By Paul Beresford - 06 December 2012

Lit from the glow of a crackling fire, surrounded by crisp countryside offering endless winter walks and on the doorstep of quaint villages twinkling with fairy lights, countryside cottages can certainly capture the spirit of Christmas.

So as the months draw in we take a very Christmassy look at some of the wonderful cottages we have to offer this December.

Run by its current owners as a 4* B&B, this Grade II Listed 4 bedroom cottage in Blackmore End is ideal for hosting family festivities. With brick floors, open fireplaces, and exposed oak framework Daisy Cottage offers a warm and welcoming setting for the season. The property even has its own barn for nativity re-enactments, attached workshop for the elves, as well as 0.75 acres of land ideal for keeping reindeer!
Lavender Cottage is a charming 18th century 2 bedroom home combining the old with the new; original period features with beautifully modernised interiors. Its bespoke kitchen/diner has double doors providing a view of the well-kept garden, and a Victorian style ceiling lantern to lighten dark winter nights. Stock is one of the most desirable villages in Essex, with a village green, plenty of pubs and churches, village shops and good local school.

Lastly, The Nutshell, a furnished 1 bedroom cottage is available to rent on Mersea Island, Colchester. Brimming with character featuring beamed ceilings and a large fireplace, it’s a perfect Christmas retreat for couples. Its fantastic location close to the estuary offers idyllic winter strolls along the waterfront. The cottage also has its own courtyard garden for sunnier days, and a separate storage shed for all those logs for the fire.
