Brentwood basketball team on fire

07 May 2014

Beresford’s sponsored Brentwood Fire Under 14s basketball team complete a perfect season by being crowned National Champions!

Having finished third last year following their only defeat in the National Semi Finals, hopes were high at the start of the season that they would go one stage further this season. At the end of the regular season, Beresfords Brentwood Fire were again Regional champions, having gone undefeated in all 16 matches.

After comfortable victories in the last 16’s and the quarter finals against teams from Buckinghamshire and Bradford, they qualified for the National Final Fours being staged at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. None of the final four teams had yet to suffer a defeat in reaching the final fours.

First up was a semi-final against Manchester Magic. At this stage last year they suffered a disastrous first quarter, but having learnt from that experience this year they battled for a 3 point lead at the end of the quarter. Building on this they won 2 of the remaining 3 quarters eventually winning by 14 points 69-55.

In the final against Worthing Thunder they again edged the first quarter by 6 points. However, they were ahead by only seven points heading into the final quarter but they held Worthing to just 11 points to pull away for a comfortable win 85-65. This is the first time in the club’s 20 year history that one of its teams has been crowned National Champions.

Beresfords Brentwood Fire were captained by Ross Luckman who went on to claim the title of the tournament’s Most Valuable Player having scored 39 points in the final.

Seven Beresford’s Brentwood Fire boys will represent Essex in the Eastern Region Under 15s County Tournament, to be held later this month with two, Pierce Maslen and Daniel Ogoro, being selected for the England Under 14 Development squad. Ross Luckman, whose proud dad Gary is a director of Beresfords, is part of the England Under 15 Development squad, continuing his pattern of playing up a year.

In the summer the team will be flying to the USA for a fortnight having been invited to take part in two basketball tournaments in Chicago in July.

Beresfords have congratulated the team on their outstanding success and are delighted to continue sponsoring them.
